Inmarsat satellite telecom service provider and smart city solution providers Tillman Digital Cities and CivicConnect have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Smart Africa Alliance, the grouping of 22 African countries that share the idea of accelerating the development of Africa through information and communication technologies.
The Memorandum of Understanding ratified on May 9, 2018, on the sidelines of the third day of the Transform Africa Summit 2018, May 7-10, 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda, provides a framework for cooperation for the development of smart cities. on the continent.
According to Hamadoun Touré, the executive director of the Smart Africa Alliance, this public-private partnership represents a significant step forward in the continent’s technology development agenda. The long-standing international expertise of Inmarsat, Tillman Digital Cities and CivicConnect in the use of information and communication technologies to improve the living environment of urban populations is considered a great opportunity to draw sure path towards a more connected and digital Africa, he believes.
For the three technology companies, the partnership with Smart Africa Alliance is also a guarantee of good business because it opens the doors of 22 markets.
Inmarsat has already proved itself in one of them, Rwanda. For 12 months, the company piloted a smart city concept in Kigali that supports various Internet of Things (IoT) solutions connected by a LoRaWAN network. This project, initiated in May 2017, could serve today as a witness for other smart city projects planned in Africa.
