30 Nov Angola: Telecoms Minister Clarifies Opening Telecoms Market to New Players
Angolan Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technologies, José Carvalho da Rocha, clarified the opening of the telecom market to new players. First, the incumbent operator Angola Telecom will see 45% of its privatized capital. The money from this operation will finance the entry of the public company into the mobile phone market, currently locked by the duopoly of Unitel and Movicel.
The telecom minister also revealed that an international tender will be launched for the entry of a fourth mobile operator into the Angolan market. This new operator, beyond the mobile, can also provide fixed telephony services and television on demand. According to José Carvalho da Rocha, the Angolan Institute of Communications (Inacom) is expected to have by the end of the year, for the investors concerned, the specifications for the fourth telecom operator.
Through this restructuring of the Angolan telecom market, the telecom minister stressed that the government wants to “increase competition, improve service and act on pricing and quality of benefits”.
