South Africa: HeroTel announces 29th ISP acquisition with Koshcom purchase

South African wireless broadband operator HeroTel has announced its 29th successive wireless ISP (WISP) takeover deal with the 100% purchase of Koshcom Communication Services, a provider of internet and VoIP services to Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein and surrounding rural areas in the North West. The acquisition fills in gaps in HeroTel’s coverage in the North West, where it has previously taken over Truecom, Safricom and Xpress Networks. HeroTel chairman Alan Knott-Craig told ITWeb: ‘Together with the other three WISPs we are now able to offer services to the vast majority of homes and businesses [in the North West]’.

Its latest merger announcement adds that ‘the HeroTel Alliance now has expanded coverage via its WISPs in the North West, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and surrounds, making it South Africa’s largest wireless internet service provider. Management expects to be making a number of announcements on further acquisitions over the next few weeks’.

Stellenbosch-based HeroTel’s website claims it currently serves 44,000 subscribers, whilst the company also operates 1,500km of owned fibre-optic infrastructure.
