Zambia: Zamtel investing in network upgrade to boost mobile market share

Zambia Telecommunications Company (Zamtel) has announced plans to invest USD370,000 on a network upgrade, ITWeb Africa reports. With the telco earmarking the funds for mobile infrastructure with a view to attracting more subscribers, Zamtel’s chief marketing officer Lho-Zindaba Sakala was cited as saying that upgrades addressing network congestion and internet connectivity issues will be completed ‘in the next few weeks’. The announcement is notable as it represents the first time the company has committed to a network upgrade since the management of the company was transferred to state-owned investment company Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) last year.

Alongside this, the company has said it will look to bolster its position in the wireless sector via other means. To that end, Ms Sakala confirmed: ‘We have also embarked on a programme of reactivating dormant and new customers as we move to expand our market share.’
