More Africa NewsZimbabwe: cellcos call for tariff hikes

March 5, 2019by myles

Mobile network operators (MNOs) in Zimbabwe have approached the industry watchdog, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), to request approval to increase their subscriber tariffs. The operators say the price hike is necessary due to the country’s ongoing cash crisis which has made it more expensive for them to import gear.

A report from TechZim says POTRAZ is now reviewing the request, although it does point out that mobile tariffs in Zimbabwe are already up to five times higher than those in neighbouring countries. The regulator has not given an indication of when it is likely to have completed its review of the proposed tariff changes.
