The President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, launched the fourth phase of construction of the national fiber optic network. The ceremony was held in Koboko District, West Nile Region. The installation of the broadband telecoms infrastructure will extend to the districts of Pakwach, Nebbi, Arua, Yumbe, Koboko, Adjumani, Katakwi and the border points of Oraba, Vurra and Mpondwe.

The fiber optic network will contribute to improving people’s access to high-quality telecom services. It will also contribute to improving the reliability and competitiveness of broadband telecoms services at the regional level, making possible the establishment of new international connections with neighboring countries, including South Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. (DRC).

Uganda’s national fiber-optic network is a World Bank-funded project run by Chinese technology company Huawei. Antony Thompson, the World Bank Country Manager for Uganda, explained that the help given by the international institution to the country, for the realization of this telecom infrastructure, is justified by its social impact. It will reduce Internet crises in Uganda and provide new opportunities for residents.

Frank Tumwebaze, the Ugandan Minister of Information, ICT and Communication, stressed that beyond improving connectivity, the national network would also create jobs.
