Telecom services remain disrupted on the telecom networks of operators Airtel, Telekom Networks Malawi and even among service providers like Malawi Digital Broadcasting Network (MDBNL) or Zodiak Broadcasting Station in Lilongwe, the capital .

The cause of this disruption was the fire that ravaged the telecom communications center of Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL), the incumbent operator, on January 15, 2020. The center housed some equipment from telecom companies and service providers.

Wanting to be reassuring about the company’s rapid reaction to resolve the inconvenience caused to users by this situation, Gladson Kuyeri, MTL’s commercial director, explained that a crisis management and recovery plan had been initiated and that the links affected by the fire started to be re-established the following day and will continue until all connections have been completely restored.

Godfrey Itaye, the director general of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), said the cause of the fire and the cost of the damage have not yet been established. Guarantor of the quality of telecoms services offered to consumers, the boss of the telecoms regulator revealed that he had ensured the restoration of certain services using his backup system.
