MTN’s good deals in Nigeria are largely driven by the data segment, whose dynamism is constantly growing in number of subscribers and in revenue. As of December 31, 2019, the subsidiary presented data revenue of 8.80 billion rand ($ 530 million), up 42.7% compared to 2018, which represents 18.87% of the income of the Nigerian subsidiary. .
MTN Group revealed that the dynamism of the data segment “was achieved thanks to a 34.9% growth in active data users to 25.2 million as well as the number of smartphones on our network which increased by 5.3 million, bringing smartphone penetration to 41.8% ”.
The company added that the growth of the data segment in Nigeria is also “the result of many initiatives launched during the year, including the redesign of the price of data plans, consumer education, frequency re-exploitation and the acceleration of the 4G network expansion. We now have 4G coverage in 123 cities, which contributes to 85.9% growth in data traffic. ”
