The 7 telecom operators in Tanzania were fined $ 540,000. The telecoms regulator once again accuses them of poor quality of service. He stressed that if the companies concerned do not pay these fines, further measures will be taken at their expense without notifying them.
The seven telecom operators present on the Tanzanian market – Airtel Tanzania Plc, MIC Tanzania Plc (Tigo), Smile Communications Tanzania Ltd, Viettel Tanzania Plc (Halotel), Vodacom Tanzania Plc, Zanzibar Telecoms Plc (Zantel) and Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) ) – were fined 1.25 billion shillings ($ 540,000).
The penalty addressed by the Tanzania Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), for poor quality of service, arises from the violation of Regulations No. 4 and 7 (3) of the 2018 Act on postal and electronic communications and the Regulation No. 12 (4) of the same law.
According to TCRA general manager James Kilaba (photo), Airtel Tanzania Plc has been fined 350 million shillings, while Vodacom is fined 400 million shillings. MIC Tanzania Plc was fined 300 million shillings while Viettel’s penalty amounted to 130 million shillings. Zantel and Smile Communications Tanzania Ltd were respectively fined 25 million shillings and 15 million shillings. Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) will pay a fine of 30 million shillings.
James Kilaba said that before the fines were paid, the various companies had been asked to defend their cases before the telecoms regulator. The boss of the telecoms regulator indicates that after hearing their arguments which were deemed unfounded, it was finally decided to sanction them. “If the companies concerned do not meet the conditions of the fine, the TCRA will take new measures without notifying them and at their expense,” said James Kilaba.
