How does VSAT work?
Satellite connectivity remains one of the most reliable connectivity solutions for remote areas as it covers multiple remote sites that are scattered over wide geographical areas. The vast distances between regions in southern Africa often complicate the installation of terrestrial networks, making satellite technology a perfect solution for remote areas in need of a quality connection, or for areas where an already installed primary terrestrial connection is temporarily unavailable.
The two-way ground system transmits a signal to a satellite in space. The signal is then bounced back off the satellite to the remote area in what is referred to as the round-trip time (RTT). The distance the signals travels results in latency, or a delay in the signal of about 650 milliseconds, which makes satellite connectivity suitable for business and home internet connection and even streaming sites like Netflix, however it can pose a challenge to applications and software requiring real-time user inputs such as online gaming or online trading.
