The Egyptian telecoms regulator has awarded Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and Etisalat Misr new telecom frequencies. The resources, the total cost of which is estimated at $ 1.1 billion, will enable telephone operators to improve the quality of services.

Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and Etisalat Misr have obtained new telecom frequency spectra following the call for tenders initiated in October 2020 by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA). According to the dailynewsegypt.com site , the new resources are granted in the 2600 MHz band reserved for broadband.

The tender, which took place in two phases, saw in its first the acquisition by Telecom Egypt of the 2 × 10 MHz spectrum for a value of 305 million USD. Vodafone Egypt acquires the 2 x 20 MHz spectrum for 540 million USD. In its second phase, Orange Egypt and Etisalat Misr respectively obtained a frequency spectrum of 2 x 10 MHz. The sale of these frequencies generated revenues of nearly $ 1.1 billion.

The new telecom frequency spectra allocated to operators are backed by two-way time division multiplexing (TDD) technology. It allows the transmission and reception in turn of the telecoms signal on the same frequency. This solution maximizes the efficient use of the frequency spectrum in data transfers, in terms of speeds and capacities, and contributes significantly to improving the quality of services provided to users.

According to Hossam El-Gamal, the executive chairman of the NTRA, the new frequencies should encourage mobile phone service providers to make new investments, which will contribute to the development and modernization of the mobile network infrastructure. These investments will improve the quality of communication services.
