State-owned fixed and mobile operator CamTel is gearing up for the commercial launch of its new nationwide GSM mobile service, after unveiling the Blue brand for its operations in August last year. Business in Cameroon reports that SIM cards are in limited circulation ahead of an official launch of the 3G and 4G network in the first quarter of this year. According to company sources, a new organisational structure of CamTel was adopted at a Board of Directors meeting on 30 December 2021 which reinforces the autonomy of the firm’s business units, with this functional reorganisation paving the way for a commercial launch of Blue Mobile.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, CamTel received new fixed and mobile concessions in March 2020 to enable it to launch a nationwide GSM network alongside its existing mobile CDMA and LTE services. In preparation for the launch, a new commercial brand name – Blue – was rolled out in August 2021 and the following month CamTel signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MTN Cameroon for the implementation of national roaming services. As such, the firm’s mobile subscribers will be able access to MTN’s network in areas not covered by CamTel’s own network, thereby maintaining service connectivity.
