In January 2021, the Tanzanian government criticized the incumbent operator for its passivity in the face of its competitors in the national telecom market. Raising the quality and coverage of its services is the answer it has found to answer it.

The Tanzania Telecommunications Company Ltd. (TTCL) has chosen technology giant Huawei to improve its telecom network in Tanzania. The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect, on the occasion of the day dedicated to Tanzania at Expo 2020 Dubai, on Sunday, February 27. As part of this collaboration, Huawei will help the Tanzanian incumbent operator to deploy its FTTH (fiber to the home) network and its fixed wireless network (4G). The cooperation will also cover the deployment and extension of TTCL’s mobile and fixed telecom infrastructure.

According to Waziri Kindamba, Managing Director of TTCL, the collaboration with Huawei “  comes at the right time  ”, in a context where Tanzania is experiencing a digital transformation reflected in an increase in demand and in the number of people connected to communication and information services. Internet.

This new partnership is part of the government’s Digital Tanzania Project (DTP), which aims to provide access to a high-speed mobile network signal to more than 75% of the Tanzanian population. The project will also connect 425 public entities (ministries, departments and public agencies) and increase the number of monthly connections from 200,000 to at least 500,000 for the public service.

For TTCL, Huawei’s support will help make it more competitive in the Tanzanian telecom market on which it is struggling to establish itself against competitors such as Vodacom, Airtel, Halotel, Tigo. The expertise of the Chinese company will “  help the government run smoothly and allow users to easily access government services through digital technology  “, said Waziri Kindamba.
