Competition in the African telecoms market is encouraging operators to turn more and more to rural areas to make a difference. Satellite telecommunications service providers, who see it as a business opportunity, are increasing their investments in this direction.

Konnect Broadband Tanzania Limited, a subsidiary of the Eutelsat group, which specializes in providing Internet services by satellite, plans to invest 64 billion Tanzanian shillings (€25.1 million) in satellite broadband for 15 years. The company made the announcement on Thursday, March 17, on the occasion of the official launch of its Internet service in the East African country. Said service will provide Tanzanians with satellite broadband with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

Through its investment in Tanzania, Konnect Broadband wants to strengthen the capacity of its network, improve coverage and position itself as a complementary service provider to local operators who are still struggling to provide quality telecom services to the majority of people residing in remote areas.

The objective of this initiative is to increase Internet penetration in the country. “We are not here to compete, but to complement what others are doing. According to our research, there is a need for high-speed internet everywhere  ,” said Philippe Baudrier (pictured), managing director of Konnect Africa.

The French company’s investment in Tanzania is part of a larger Konnect Africa project to invest €274.5 million in 40 African countries. This investment responds to the growing need for connectivity of populations, especially those in rural communities, across the continent. According to the latest figures from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), internet penetration has reached 50% of Tanzania’s population of 60 million.

Konnect Broadband estimates that its investment will also create around 100 sales, service and installation jobs in addition to generating revenue.
