Carrier-neutral datacentre operator Raxio has confirmed its intention to invest in Tanzania’s new Dar es Salaam-based Tier III datacentre as the East African country progresses with telecommunications infrastructure development.

With three subsea cables already landed in Tanzania and another set for next year, Tanzania is raising its profile as an influential technology and telecommunications connectivity hub within the East African region.

Tanzania views expansion of its tech infrastructure backbone as “critical to support the continued digital and economic growth of the region” hence the Raxio Tanzania datacentre“will serve as a key enabler of international IP transit for the East African country’s six landlocked” neighbours.

Raxio Group will commission the Tanzanian facility in 2023 and once operational, will become the company’s sixth datacentre under its African portfolio that includes a 1.5MW facility in Uganda and others under construction in DRC, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast and Mozambique.

“Raxio Tanzania will deliver much needed colocation capacity to local, regional and international enterprises, cross connection services with local and international carriers and a series of value-added services,” Raxio Group said on Wednesday.

CEO of Raxio Group Robert Mullins said “… the company will continue to build larger, hyper-scale ready facilities across a wider geographic footprint” to meet the demand as new connectivity solutions land in the African region, pivoting on “rapid evolution of the digital ecosystem” on the continent.

He added, “As the second largest telecoms market in East Africa, with growing demand for connectivity and related services and its strategic location, Tanzania becomes an important centrepiece of our growing portfolio. Raxio Tanzania (will drive) a positive impact through both direct and indirect creation of highly skilled jobs for Tanzanian professionals, and a facility that is built and operated to the highest international environmental standards.”
