More Africa NewsAfricell Angola commercial launch set for 7 April

Angola’s new mobile network operator Africell will launch its commercial services in the capital Luanda on 7 April, according to newspaper Novo Jornal’s sources who gave details of a launch ceremony to be held on that day.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that Africell delayed its full mobile launch target window to April 2022 after disappointing negotiations on infrastructure sharing with the country’s mobile market leader Unitel meant that it had to invest more heavily than anticipated in its own cell sites in the capital. Africell had requested access to significant numbers of sites which apparently lacked the technical capacity in terms of energy supply or equipment weight load to support multi-operator sharing. Separately, in March 2022 Africell reached an agreement with Unitel on network interconnection after six months of negotiations – having already agreed interconnection with second-placed player Movicel – clearing the way for an April commercial launch over a network initially spanning around 600 owned or leased sites across Luanda.
