State-backed fixed network operator Angola Telecom reports on its website that it launched the ‘Conecta Angola’ (Connect Angola) project on 12 June 2023 with the aim of connecting some of the most remote areas of the country with free internet services, supported by the Angosat-2 communications satellite. One of the first locations to receive an Angosat-2 access point is Belo Horizonte in the municipality of Cunhinga in Bie province, where students and other users at the local Academic Centre of Excellence can use the new internet facilities free of charge. The project will be rolled out to other schools and public sector facilities such as hospitals and municipal administration offices around Angola, focusing on remote locations where it is commercially unviable for other operators to deploy broadband networks.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Angola’s Angosat-2 satellite was launched into space in October 2022, replacing the failed Angosat-1 which was lost in April 2018, with Angosat-2 finally declared ready for service on 1 December 2022 after tests.
