MTN aims to become the main provider of technological solutions in Africa by 2025. As the deadline approaches, the company is increasing initiatives to give itself the means to achieve its objectives.

Telecommunications operator MTN Nigeria plans to adopt Application Programming Interface (API) technology to improve its customer service delivery. This was revealed by Shoyinka Shodunke (pic), the company’s Chief Information Officer, at the 2023 African Internet Governance Forum (AIGF) held last week in Abuja .

This initiative is part of MTN’s efforts to transform itself into a fully-fledged technology company in line with its “Ambition 2025” strategy. The company aims to become the leading digital services provider in Africa to meet the ever-increasing demand on the continent. The company also wants to “  provide services that go well beyond connectivity  ”.

“  We see ourselves as a technology operator, which is a key factor, because as part of this ambition, we will put in place platforms that will allow us to foster collaboration between ecosystems,” said Mr. Shodunke  .

The adoption of the application programming interface should make it possible to innovate and improve its services for the benefit of subscribers. This will allow the company to strengthen its leading position in the Nigerian telecoms market in which it controls a 38.7% share, according to the latest statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission. Its rivals 9mobile, Airtel and Globacom hold 6.24%, 27.24% and 27.82% of the national mobile subscriber base respectively.
