Telecommunications company Orange Sierra Leone announced on Thursday September 28 that it had launched a pilot phase of fifth generation (5G) mobile technology. The company promises its prepaid and postpaid customers faster speeds, improved connectivity and low latency.

Initially, Orange Sierra Leone’s 5G trial service will be available only in the central business district of the capital Freetown. The operator will test some use cases for 5G expansion to increase the speed of fixed wireless access and mobile broadband.

“  This launch is indeed a milestone for Sierra Leone. I am delighted that Orange Sierra Leone is taking the lead in setting the basic technology standard for 5G by deploying this cutting-edge pilot phase across our network, in line with the company’s vision to become a leading mobile internet service provider. first class in Sierra Leone  ,” said Sekou Drame, CEO of Sonatel, parent company of Orange Sierra Leone.

Orange becomes the first Sierra Leonean operator to test 5G. Its competitor Africell is also preparing for the deployment of ultra-high speed. The company received spectrum for 5G in November 2022.

Once deployed, 5G is expected to enable Orange Sierra Leone to meet the growing demand for high-speed connectivity and strengthen its position in the local telecoms market. Ultra-broadband is also expected to accelerate the Sierra Leonean government’s digital transformation ambitions. Technology will facilitate the use of smart homes and buildings, smart cities, e-learning, e-government, 3D video, telemedicine, virtual reality and augmented reality, streaming, artificial intelligence , the Internet of Things (IoT)…
