Togo looks set to secure USD200 million from the World Bank to boost internet access and its electricity grid, as part of the Improved Digital Access and Electricity Access Project (IDEA), according to newspaper Togo First. If realised, the financing deal would be the west African nation’s biggest to date from the Bank and according to people with knowledge of the matter, a deal could be signed ‘soon’. In reference to IDEA, one unnamed source is cited by the paper as saying that the project ‘has been in the pipeline for some time’ and that in terms of its aims for the telecoms sector, the IDEA project aims to increase broadband network coverage and access to digital services. ‘Fibre-optic cables will be installed along the new high-voltage transmission lines, creating a state-of-the-art communications infrastructure … These lines will be equipped with fibre-optic cables to extend the reach of the fibre-optic network of [Societe d’Infrastructures Numeriques (SIN), the sovereign entity responsible for holding strategic assets in the telecommunications and ICT sector in Togo] … thus enabling equitable distribution of bandwidth to all telecoms operators in Togo,’ unnamed sources were cited as saying, adding ‘it will reduce the digital divide and boost socio-economic development in previously isolated areas of Togo’.
