Liquid Telecom Rolls Out First Direct Land-Based Fibre Link To Connect East To West Africa

The Pan-African telecoms group, Liquid Telecom has launched the first direct land-based fibre link that connects East to West Africa.
The company made this announcement at a media briefing at the AfricaCom conference that was in Cape Town last week.
Liquid’s Group CEO, Nic Rudnick said that this breakthrough digital corridor comes after the completion of Liquid Telecom’s new high-capacity fibre link that runs 2,600 kilometres across the DRC.
Until recently, there was no direct, land-based fibre network linking East and West Africa. Network traffic between Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Kinshasa in the DRC, for example, travelled via London. Liquid Telecom’s East to West fibre link meets the rapidly growing demand for fast, cost-effective and reliable communication across the southern hemisphere, to according Rudnick.
Dobek Pater, the Director at Africa Analysis, said Africa has been in need of a direct east-to-west telecommunications backbone for the longest time. He added that Liquid Telecom has done what many African states and organisations had been contemplating for years without no success by deploying this high-capacity fibre optic backbone to connect sub-sea cables from East Africa with cables in West Africa.
