ECOWAS countries have set themselves until March 31, 2021 to abolish roaming charges on mobile communications. The project has been dragging on since 2017. On September 29, 2020, the national regulatory authorities (ANR) of the telecoms sector of the member countries of the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will validate the action plan for the effective implementation of the free project. roaming as of March 31, 2021. This is the resolution taken last week.
During the virtual meeting organized on September 15, 2020 to examine the progress made in the implementation of the sub-regional tariff initiative and to develop a strategy for its acceleration, the directors general of the ANRs, aware that it has stalled since 2017 because of the delay of some countries, have adopted a resolution allowing countries that are already ready to start immediately.
They also entrusted the Telecommunications / ICT Regulatory Authority of Côte d’Ivoire (ARTCI) with the coordination of measures aimed at strengthening collaboration between the various telecom regulators in the implementation of free roaming. The Ivorian telecoms regulator will be supported in this task by the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana.
Currently, only Senegal, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Togo, Sierra Leone and Liberia have truly launched the project to abolish roaming charges on communications. mobile. The nine countries had come to an agreement in view of the delays that were accumulating at the regional level.
