Ghana: Huawei Technologies to build 2,000 new telecom sites in rural areas

The government of Ghana is speeding up the coverage of rural areas with telecom services. Through the Ministry of Communications, he signed a partnership with Exim Bank of China for the construction of 2,000 telecom sites. The site entrusted to Huawei Technologies is to be delivered in September 2021.
The Ministry of Communications, through the Ghana Electronic Communications Investment Fund (GIFEC), signed an agreement on September 29, 2020 with Exim Bank of China. It concerns the construction by Huawei Technologies of 2,000 additional telecom sites in rural areas.
Although mobile communication in Ghana has experienced rapid development in recent years, the development of rural telecommunications is still relatively lagging behind. The rural telephony project for which these telecom sites are built will further promote digital inclusion in villages and increase national telecom coverage from 83% to 95%.
They are expected to help provide voice and data services to more than 3.4 million people residing in underserved and unserved communities. The new telecom sites will strengthen the 400 already deployed for 2,000 villages, which have helped connect 1.2 million people. The 2,000 new telecom sites, whose delivery is expected in September 2021, will be leased to national operators who will be responsible for expanding the telecoms market.
According to Abraham Kofi Asante, administrator of GIFEC, “ Partnering with Huawei on this project will ensure that all people in Ghana are part of the government’s digitization agenda, and improve the socio-economic well-being of people living in rural Ghana. These beneficiaries will be able to communicate effectively with their family, friends and do business with people from all over the world ”.
