
Angola: Unitel launches into mobile payment

Announced in 2019, mobile payment should soon be available in Angola. Cellular operator Unitel is expected to be the first to provide the service in the country. He obtained his license from the National Bank of Angola which aims for a financial inclusion of 50% of adults by the end of 2022.
The mobile telephone operator Unitel can now offer mobile money services to its consumers. The telecoms company has obtained the relevant license from the National Bank of Angola (BNA). According to the financial institution, this grant is part of the priority actions of the national financial inclusion plan which aims to guarantee the population better access to financial services.
With the launch in 2013 of “Bankita” savings accounts, as well as simplified accounts for populations with low incomes, the BNA estimates that, with the mobile payment service, it has taken a new step towards the increase to 50% of by the end of 2022 of the number of adult citizens with access to basic financial services.
In 2018, during the 8th meeting of the payment systems of the Central Banks of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), held on November 28 and 29, 2018 in Luanda, Pedro de Castro e Silva, administrator of the BNA, announced the introduction of mobile payment in Angola in 2019. He pointed out that the country was working with the World Bank to adopt adequate legislation on the issue.
