Mauritius: Government authorizes Mauritius Telecom to deploy third fiber optic submarine cable

Mauritius will strengthen its broadband connectivity through the deployment of a new fiber optic submarine cable carried by Mauritius Telecom. The telecoms infrastructure for which the incumbent operator has obtained the green light from the government should be completed in 2023.
Mauritius Telecom Ltd will deploy a third submarine fiber optic cable that will link the country to South Africa and by extension to the rest of the world. During the Council of Ministers on Friday, November 27, members of the government accepted the related agreement in principle.
As part of this new high-speed telecoms infrastructure project, a landing station will be installed in Baie-de-Jacotet. The new system will consist of four pairs of fibers with the latest cutting edge technology which gives a capacity of 18 Tbps per pair of fibers. It will be approximately 3,200 km long.
Part of the submarine cable will be laid in the exclusive economic zone of Mauritius – the maritime area over which the State exercises sovereign rights in matters of exploration and use of resources -, another will be installed in the waters while a final part will be deployed in South African waters.
The project should be completed in the second quarter of 2023. It will strengthen broadband capacity in the country and meet the growing demand for connectivity expressed by populations and businesses. It will also support the digital transformation underway in the country.
