Niger: Government announces $ 107 million to connect more than 2,000 villages to the Internet

Over the next six years, the National Agency for the Information Society of Niger will connect nearly 2,111 villages to telecom services. The project that will change the lives of 1.4 million people was launched on December 3. It will cost $ 107 million.
The “Smart Villages Project for Rural Growth and Digital Inclusion (PVI)” was officially launched on Thursday, December 3 in Niamey, Niger. Led by the National Agency for the Information Society (ANSI), it aims to connect 2,111 target villages to mobile phone and broadband Internet services.
58 billion FCFA ($ 107 million) will be disbursed by the government for the realization of this phase which runs over six years, said Ibrahima Guimba Saidou, the director general of ANSI.
As part of the PVI, the target villages will benefit from digital infrastructures, digital and financial education campaigns, the modernization of the means of payment of farmers ‘and herders’ cooperatives to develop dematerialized transactions, the creation of data platforms for farmers and ranchers.
Nearly 1.4 million people will benefit from this digital revolution initiated by the government of Niger. According to ANSI, once the project is effective in the 15,000 villages in the country, it will speed up and facilitate Internet connection for over 85% of the country’s population.
