Burkina Faso makes fiber optic network development a priority in 2021

The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated Burkina Faso’s poor numerical preparation. The government is committed to fixing it. Improving connectivity becomes a priority.
The government of Burkina Faso has decided to increase its investment in optical fiber in 2021. Christophe Dabiré, the Prime Minister, made this known during his general policy statement to the National Assembly on Thursday, February 4 . The objective is to make high-speed telecommunications infrastructure an engine of national development.
“ Information and communication technologies are today at the heart of the growth of economies. In order to accelerate the digital transformation, the government will continue to build the national fiber optic network as part of the National Telecommunications Backbone project. It will accelerate the commissioning of the fiber already installed and the development of quality electronic communications services for the State, the private sector and the populations, ”he said.
The investment that the government wants to accentuate in optical fiber stems from the weaknesses in the country’s digital readiness, revealed during the coronavirus crisis. The movement restrictions imposed by the government have hampered the continuity of a number of activities, including public services, education, economic activities. A situation which has been better managed in developed countries thanks to high-speed connectivity accessible by the majority of the population and by public services.
Through the extension of the national fiber optic network and the operationalization of the telecommunications infrastructure already deployed, the government wants to strengthen the development of several pillars essential to the advent of the digital economy, in particular quality connectivity, but affordable, technological innovation.
