Tanzania: Six telecom operators sanctioned with a global fine of 16.4 million USD

The Tanzanian regulator is keeping the pressure on telecom companies. It remains determined to guarantee people a high quality telecoms experience.
Airtel Tanzania Plc, MIC Tanzania Plc (Tigo), Viettel Tanzania Plc (Halotel), Vodacom Tanzania Plc, Zanzibar Telecoms Plc (Zantel) and Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) were fined 38.1 billion Tanzanian shillings (USD 16.4 million). On Wednesday February 17, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) said the six telecom companies are being punished once again for poor quality of service.
According to James Kilaba, the director general of TCRA, it was decided “ that each service provider should use the amount they are required to pay to invest in improving the service […] We gave them 90 days and we have agreed to sign this special agreement. Any supplier who acts contrary to this agreement will be punished without notice ”.
Airtel was fined 11.5 billion shillings. For Tigo, the amount to be reinvested in its network amounts to 13 billion shillings. Vodacom was fined 7.8 billion shillings. We have 3.4 billion shillings for Halotel; 1.3 billion shillings for TTCL and 1 billion shillings for Zantel.
The new financial sanction against telecom operators comes seven months after the latest $ 540,000 that occurred in July 2020. Since 2015, the regulator has been determined to improve the telecoms experience of populations across the country.
Through the high-quality network that the regulator requires from telephone companies, it wants to guarantee the country a solid telecoms infrastructure on which the digital transformation can be based.
