Benin has signed the agreement which grants Sonatel the management of public telecoms infrastructure

The duopoly on the Beninese telecoms market maintained since 2017 by MTN and Moov is on the verge of shattering. With its expertise, the government expects Sonatel to exert pressure on its competitors similar to that of its various other African markets.

The Sonatel group has officially become the delegated manager of the Benin digital infrastructure company (SBIN). Friday, May 21, the two parties officially signed the related agreement. It will enable the incumbent operator of Senegal to quickly operationalize the public telecoms company of Benin, giving it the means to offer competitive offers and services to consumers, businesses and other telecom players.

Through delegated management, the Sonatel group indicates that it will support the SBIN by sharing technical and commercial skills and sharing experience in the development and implementation of a master plan, with the deployment of ” a latest generation mobile network, the launch of mobile and mobile money services and the strengthening of activities.

The placing of the SBIN under the administration of Sonatel follows the will of the Beninese government to relaunch competition on the Beninese telecoms market shared since 2017 between MTN and Moov. Between call to order and sanctions, the telecoms regulator has never ceased to fight with telecom operators on the costs of services, the quality of the network, and compliance with regulations. With the technical and commercial expertise of Sonatel acquired over the years in more competitive markets, the government is certain that the delegated manager has the power to restructure the Benin telecoms market.

The investments planned by SBIN, under the supervision of Sonatel, should contribute to access to quality telecom services at affordable prices for a greater number of Beninese. Sékou Dramé, Managing Director of Sonatel, said that this collaboration will help ”  transform Benin into a digital services platform for West Africa  “.
