Smart Africa Alliance will help Sudan achieve its digital agenda
September 1st 2021
The lifting of the embargo on Sudan in 2017 allowed the country to return to the international scene. A return that allows it to integrate various continental projects on the development of telecoms or to benefit from various international expertise for its digital transformation.
The government of Sudan will benefit from the support of Smart Africa, the alliance of African countries which are committed to accelerating the socio-economic development of the continent through information and communication technologies, in the achievement of its digital ambitions. Several agreements were signed in this direction by members of the Sudanese government and Lacina Koné, the managing director of Smart Africa, during his working visit to the country from August 28 to 30.
According to Hashem Hassab Al-Rasoul, Sudanese Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Smart Africa Alliance will support the country in the realization of two major projects which are smart government and smart agriculture. The alliance also obtained a grant of USD 95,000 from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) to finance a feasibility study “One Africa Network” (OAN), the unique telecoms network project that is being carried out by the Alliance. alliance and which is intended to reduce the cost of roaming.
Lacina Koné’s visit to Khartoum follows Sudan’s entry into the Smart Africa Alliance last July. He became the 32 th country to join. One of the marks of its return to the international scene after the lifting by the United States in 2017 of the embargo it had been the subject of since 1993.
Currently, several African countries are making digital technology a pillar of their diversification and economic recovery. Sudan is no exception. The country which has long focused on oil is already stepping up its actions to successfully enter the fourth industrial revolution and enjoy its fallout. The Smart Africa Alliance will be of significant help in achieving this objective.
