Central African Republic: Telecel signs a partnership agreement with Lynk to extend its connectivity in the country
September 23rd 2021
The Covid-19 contributed in 2020 to the increase in demand for telecom services across the Central African Republic. But the current average telecoms coverage of the country prevents it from being satisfied. Telecel has teamed up with an international partner to bypass this obstacle from space.
The mobile telephone operator Telecel Centrafrique has signed a partnership agreement with Lynk, a satellite connectivity provider. Announced Wednesday, September 22, the agreement will allow Telecel to extend its connectivity offer to more consumers across the country. Via the technology offered to Telecel Centrafrique, Lynk will give people the ability to connect directly to the satellite telecom network from an unmodified standard telephone without necessarily going through a telecoms tower on the ground.
For Malek Atrissi, Chairman and CEO of Telecel Centrafrique, the contract signed with Lynk marks the next “ step to guarantee our customers the best non-stop telecoms experience possible. We strongly believe in providing innovative, state-of-the-art solutions that connect those who are not in our country. Lynk’s service is essential to solve this problem ”.
“By partnering with Lynk, Telecel aims to bridge the digital divide by extending its services to the entire population, wherever they are, ” he said.
The latest report from the Electronic Communications and Postal Regulatory Authority (ARCEP), published in the third quarter of 2020, estimated the mobile penetration rate at around 48% for the total fleet, and at nearly 31% for the active park. Telecel occupied second place in the market, with 37% of the shares, behind Orange which held 48% and ahead of Moov Africa RCA with its 15%. With a coverage rate of the population in the mobile network estimated by Arcep at 56.33%, it appears that a large part of the Central African population remains deprived of access to telecom services due to a lack of telecom installations in their area. life.
By bypassing the weak telecoms infrastructure on the ground using the satellite Telecel Centrafrique has the opportunity to reach more people, improve its market share and financial income which represented 45% of the value of the Central African telecoms market – 9,496,209,349 FCFA (USD 17 million) – at the end of September 2020.
