Angola: Unitel reveals that it has already invested $ 25 million in preparing its network for 5G

Since last year, Unitel SA has been impatient for 5G. The company has also engaged in discussions with the regulator on the availability of essential resources. It intends to offer an enhanced telecoms experience and to dominate the national telecoms market.
The Angolan mobile operator Unitel SA revealed, Tuesday, October 12, that it had already invested the sum of $ 25 million in technology and the modernization of its network to prepare it for 5G. State-of-the-art radio equipment is being installed at more than 400 sites, the company said. Alongside these investments, Unitel has also been working on upgrades to improve access to 3G, 4G and 4.5G services.
Last May, during a press briefing, Unitel’s director of operations and supervision, José Mavungo, expressed the company’s desire to launch 5G and deplored the slowness in the availability of adequate spectrum at the level of the Angolan Institute of Telecommunications (Inacom). He said that once the spectrum is obtained, the coverage of the country with 5G would be phased in as was the case with 4G.
Since April 2021, Unitel has been resolutely committed to preparing its telecoms network for 5G. To this end, the company has signed a framework agreement with the Swedish telecoms equipment manufacturer Ericsson to modernize its 2G, 3G and 4G network. Amílcar Safeca, administrator and technical director of Unitel SA, had moreover described this investment in the network as a commitment ” to provide Angolan residents and businesses with the best telecommunications services “.
Unitel wants to be among the first companies to introduce 5G in Angola in view of the advantages that the technology will guarantee in the market in terms of new revenues, particularly in the business segment which is increasingly greedy in connectivity. Mobile technology will also allow it to consolidate its market share with the imminent arrival of Africell, which promises to be aggressive.
