Tanzania: Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo and Halotel acquire new telecom frequencies for 187.5 million USD

The Tanzanian government aims in particular to connect 80% of the population to the Internet by 2025 in a context of accelerated digital transformation. To achieve its objectives, the executive is strengthening the capacities of telecom operators.
Tanzanian telecommunications operators Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo and Halotel have acquired additional frequencies worth a total of USD 187.5 million. These telecoms resources auctioned by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) on Tuesday 11 October will notably enable operators to improve the quality of services provided to populations.
A total of 11 frequency blocks were acquired in the 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. According to the TCRA, the newly acquired frequencies are expected to advance Tanzania’s mobile and fixed broadband infrastructure; improve the quality of services; facilitate socio-economic benefits such as education, health, agriculture and financial services through information and communication technologies (ICT). They should also make it possible to reduce the costs of mobile communications.
The acquisition of additional frequencies comes in a context where Tanzanian telecom operators are seeking to improve coverage and modernize their networks, in particular with the deployment of 5G. On September 1, Vodacom launched this next-generation mobile technology, beating its competitors.
“ The acquisition of spectrum recently auctioned by the TCRA confirms our strategic intention to deploy true 5G technology in Tanzania. The acquired frequencies of 3500 MHz will enable us to deliver the best internet experience to our customers across the country with true 5G technology ,” said Emmanuel Mallya, CTO of Tigo Tanzania.
