Africell expected to complete mobile money pilot in April; Unitel Money has 1.5m users

Angola’s newest mobile network operator Africell is expected to launch its ‘Afrimoney’ mobile money platform soon after it completes a six-month pilot of the service in April, according to a report from Expansao. Having received the requisite licence from the National Bank of Angola (BNA) to operate a mobile wallet/payment system in October 2022, Africell – which shook up the telecoms market with its mobile voice/data launch in April that year – has reportedly been using the pilot phase to optimise the technical aspects of the platform and facilitate its integration into the regulatory environment. Larger cellular rival Unitel launched its ‘Unitel Money’ service in August 2021, which according to BNA deputy governor Pedro Castro e Silva, cited by Expansao, has so far registered around 1.5 million users. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Unitel is aiming for five million mobile money users within four years.
