iColo launches its first data center in Mozambique

Acquired by Digital Realty in 2019, iColo is beginning its real expansion in Africa. Until then, the company had three data centers spread across these two campuses in Mombasa and Nairobi, Kenya.
Data center operator iColo, a subsidiary of Digital Realty, opened its first carrier-neutral data center in Maputo, Mozambique on Wednesday, February 8. Dubbed MPM1, the infrastructure is expected to allow the company to expand its footprint and meet growing connectivity needs along the east coast of Africa. The project was first announced in October 2021.
According to iColo, MPM1 offers around 350m² of lettable space, equivalent to around 80 racks in the early development phase, with the ability to accommodate further upgrades. The data center is built on a 9,500 m² campus located on Avenida Lenine in the Mozambican capital.
The construction of this data center is part of the expansion of Digital Realty’s data center platform in Africa. The company has pledged to invest USD 500 million over the next ten years to accelerate the growth of the continent’s digital economy. In November 2021, the company acquired Nigerian data center operator Medallion. It has also invested in the expansion of iColo’s two campuses located in Mombasa and Nairobi, Kenya.
This new data center was built in a context marked by the resurgence of investments in the growing African data center market. These investments are notably stimulated by the growing demand for high-speed connectivity as well as the digitization needs of African companies. Raxio Group started in September 2022 the construction of a level 3 neutral data center in the Beluluane Industrial Park (MozParks) in Maputo.
