Ghana: partially identified SIM cards will be disconnected on March 10

The campaign to register SIM cards for Ghanaian telecom subscribers was supposed to end on March 31, 2022. The government had to postpone the deadline several times until November 30.
Ghanaian telecommunications subscribers have until Friday March 10 to finalize the registration of their SIM cards or risk being disconnected from the network, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has warned.
This warning from the regulator mainly concerns subscribers who have already completed the first stage of the process. In addition, subscribers who begin the identification process must now complete it within two weeks or risk being deactivated.
The SIM card registration campaign started on October 1, 2021 and was due to end on March 31, 2022. The deadline was extended to July 31, as a large majority of SIM cards had not yet been registered and a large part of the population had not yet obtained the national biometric identity card. The government had to extend the deadline to September 30 and then to November 30.
At the end of this period, more than 8 million SIM cards have been disconnected in accordance with the directive of the Ministry of Communication and Digitization. However, the regulator realized that there were first-stage registrations that had not yet been completed.
The regulator recalls that “ the importance of the SIM card registration exercise is to develop and build a database of SIM cards, with integrity, which will help reduce fraudulent activities ”.
