March 24, 2023by myles0

Since 2013, the Guinean authorities have been stepping up their efforts to revive the public telecom company, which went bankrupt a year earlier. Ten years later, the company is still not ready to return to the market.

The Guinean government wants to rely on the expertise of the telecom operator MTN Guinea as part of the launch of the commercial activities of the public company Guinée Télécoms. The question was the subject of discussions between Ousmane Gaoual Diallo, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy, and representatives of the telecom operator, on Wednesday March 22.

During the exchanges, the emphasis was mainly placed on various aspects of this possible collaboration, in particular the testing of Guinea Telecom’s SIM cards, and the development of the IT master plan for the public operator’s network.

The support of MTN Guinea should in particular make it possible to accelerate the launch of Guinea Telecom, which has been dragging on for years. The start of commercial activities of the company was initially planned for the first half of 2023 , but this will not finally be possible before 2024. The company must first conduct tests and operationalize all of its telecom towers. It will also have to recruit to expand its administrative, commercial, accounting and network departments.

As a reminder, MTN is the second Guinean telecom operator in terms of market share. The company controlled 24.8% of the national mobile phone subscriber base in the third quarter of 2022, according to statistics from the Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ARPT). The rest of the market is shared between Orange (65.9%) and Cellcom (9.4%).
