Somalia: the regulator and telecom operators finalize the implementation of network interconnection

The lack of interconnection between the systems of telecom operators has long hampered the full development of the Somali telecom sector. The various attempts by the authorities to correct this irregularity have ended in failure.
The Somali telecommunications operators Hormuud, Somtel, Amtel, SomLink, Golis and TeleSom have completed the interconnection of their various networks started last February. This was announced by the National Communications Authority of Somalia (NCA) on Sunday, March 26.
According to the regulator, this initiative will allow the exchange of voice traffic between the six operators. Customers of these different telecom companies will now be able to communicate more easily, without necessarily being on the same network. This should in particular make it possible to extend the coverage of the telecom network and guarantee consumers an improved experience.
The interconnection of telecom networks follows an agreement signed on December 5, 2022 between the telecom operators and the NCA, in accordance with the texts in force. It is part of the government’s efforts to improve connectivity and promote competition in the telecommunications sector in a context of accelerated digital transformation. Previous interconnection attempts in Somalia had failed. It was in 2000 and in 2014.
“ The successful interconnection between the six operators is a significant achievement for the telecommunications industry in Somalia. It will promote competition, lower prices and provide more options for customers. We commend the efforts made by the operators to achieve this important milestone and encourage them to continue their collaboration for the benefit of the industry and consumers ,” said Mustafa Yasin, Chief Executive Officer of the NCA.
