Tanzania has invested $170.2 million in telecom infrastructure over the past two years

The Tanzanian government aims to make digital a driver of the country’s socio-economic development. To achieve this, the executive is increasing investments in strengthening the national telecoms infrastructure.

The Tanzanian government has invested 400 billion shillings (170.2 million USD) over the past two years to improve and strengthen communications infrastructure in the country. This was stated by Kundo Mathew, Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Information Technology. This was on the occasion of the 5th Innovation and Technology Forum held earlier this week in Dar es Salaam.

This investment reflects the efforts made by the government of Samia Suluhu Hassan, since taking office in March 2021, to accelerate digital transformation and make it an engine of socio-economic development in Tanzania. In May 2021, the executive secured $150 million in funding from the World Bank for the implementation of the Digital Tanzania Project (DTP). The said project focused in particular on strengthening the legal, regulatory and institutional environment of the digital economy; the generalization of high-speed connectivity; the implementation of e-government.

Over the past two years, government projects have included the extension of the national fiber optic infrastructure, the construction of centers for the promotion of ICT, the construction of telecom towers, interconnection to neighboring countries, the launch of fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology…

These various initiatives have notably contributed to accelerating the use of mobile services in Tanzania. The total number of mobile phone service subscriptions increased from 52.9 million in March 2021 to 61.8 million in March 2023, according to statistics from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). Over the same period, the number of Internet users rose from 29.07 million to 33.09 million.

“  The administration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan continues to improve the investment environment, mainly to attract people to invest in the communication sector and the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. )  ,” Kundo Mathew said.
