East African Communications Organization entrusts Huawei with building ICT capacity for its members

Created in 2012, the EACO aims to guarantee communication services for all in East Africa. Its member countries include Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
The East African Communications Organization (EACO) will benefit from the expertise of Chinese technology company Huawei to develop information and communication technologies (ICT) in the region. A protocol on capacity building between the two parties was signed on Monday, June 26, between the two parties.
The cooperation will cover areas such as fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology, cybersecurity and data protection, through trainings, workshops and other support mechanisms. It will also support the co-organization of events such as conferences and technical panels.
The MoU was signed on the sidelines of EACO’s 25th Congress and 28th Annual Assembly being held in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi. It comes at a time when governments in African countries are stepping up efforts to build capacity as digital transformation accelerates, as does people’s demand for high-speed connectivity and digital services.
This collaboration is expected to accelerate the achievement of EACO’s objectives of harmonizing ICT policies and regulatory frameworks in East Africa; to promote the development of broadcasting, postal services and telecommunications/ICT; to design ways to establish fast, reliable, secure, affordable and efficient communication services within the East African Community (EAC).
” Through this MoU, Huawei and EACO commit to closely collaborate on a series of initiatives aimed at accelerating digital participation in East Africa ,” said Yang Hongjie, director of the strategy department. and Huawei’s ICT policy in the Southern Africa region.
