Togo will launch mobile number portability before the end of the year
July 17th 2023
The Togolese mobile telephony market is disputed between Togo Cellulaire and Moov Africa. These two operators are regularly called to order by the telecoms regulator for non-compliance with regulatory thresholds for quality and coverage of services.
The portability of telephone numbers will be effective in Togo by the end of 2023. Kadiri Ouro-Agoro, legal and consumer protection director of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP), said last week that technical arrangements were being put in place to ensure a quick and uninterrupted transition.
The Togolese law on electronic communications of 2012, number portability is “ the possibility for a user, subscribed to an electronic communications service provider, when he changes provider to keep the same geographical number without changing geographical location. and to keep his non-geographic number, fixed or mobile, when he changes supplier while remaining in Togo ”.
It was last April that ARCEP started the technical implementation of mobile number portability in Togo in accordance with the relative regulations adopted in July 2022 and approved by the government a month later. The initiative follows a market study carried out by the regulator in October 2021 which showed that 95% of Togolese consumers were in favor of mobile number portability.
The advent of mobile number portability should guarantee greater freedom of choice for Togolese consumers. They can opt for the telecom operator offering the best rates, the best quality of service or the features best suited to their needs without changing numbers. This should also strengthen the competition between Togo Cellulaire and Moov Africa.
