Cameroon: the government gives telecom operators two months to adjust the prices of their offers

Last April, telecom consumers launched a campaign to boycott telecom operators MTN and Orange. They blamed the latter for the poor quality and high cost of their services.

Cameroonian mobile operators have two months to adjust their respective tariffs for postpaid, prepaid subscriptions and promotional offers under penalty of sanctions. The order comes from Minette Libom Li Likeng (pictured), Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, as quoted by ITWeb Africa .

This measure follows a protest campaign led by Cameroonian telecom consumers last April to denounce the gap between the quality of services provided by telecom operators and the cost of its services, considered excessively high. The government called a meeting after which telecom operators announced measures to address consumer concerns.

Last May, the Cameroon Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART) had already imposed pecuniary sanctions totaling six billion CFA francs (10.04 million USD) on the mobile telephone operators Camtel, MTN, Orange and Viettel. The regulator accuses these companies of “recurring breaches” of the obligations of coverage and quality of electronic communications services contained in their respective specifications.
