Gabon obtains a $68.5 million loan from the World Bank to accelerate its digital transformation

The Gabonese government has made digital technology one of the pillars of the country’s socio-economic development. The executive recently signed an agreement with an Indian company to provide the country with a national data center.
Gabon will benefit from support from the World Bank to accelerate the implementation of its digital transformation project called “Digital Gabon”. On Tuesday January 2, the government took out a loan of 68.5 million USD from the Bretton Woods institution.
The funding will be used in particular to accelerate the adoption of digitalized public services; strengthen data protection, cybersecurity and the security of data exchanges within the public sector; modernize legal identity systems…
“ This is essential in order to promote opportunities for all Gabonese citizens and residents. The operation will benefit individuals and businesses by improving financial accessibility and the quality of public services ,” said Cheick Kante, World Bank Operations Director for Gabon.
Remember that the Gabonese government has placed digital transformation at the center of Gabon’s economic and social transformation for around ten years. In July 2023, the executive signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian company Shapoorji-Pallonji for the construction of a national data center. The country is also participating in the construction of a 500 km submarine cable with Cameroon, the Republic of Congo and Guinea.
