In Ghana, mobile money agents ordered to register before February 1, 2024

Ghanaian mobile money agents have until January 31 to link their accounts to their biometric national identity cards or tax identification numbers (TIN). Violators will be blocked on February 1. This decision by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) was revealed on Tuesday January 30 by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (GCT) which acted as mediator.

Agents whose accounts will be blocked on February 1 will have the possibility of going to any point of sale of their operators with the necessary documents to proceed with their registration.

This initiative follows the telecom subscriber registration campaign carried out by the Ghanaian authorities from October 1, 2021. The operation aimed to link each SIM to the verified identity of an individual to curb criminal activities. The operation was to end on March 31, 2022, but the deadline was pushed back several times until May 31, 2023. On this date, millions of unregistered SIM cards were disconnected.

The suspension of mobile money agents should affect mobile financial services which facilitate financial inclusion in a context where a large part of the population is unbanked.

“  We understand the importance of mobile financial services in facilitating financial inclusion and economic growth in the country. We therefore remain committed to taking the necessary steps to provide convenient, secure and accessible financial services to all Ghanaians  ,” the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications said.
