In Nigeria, IHS Towers deploys 10,000 km of optical fiber to strengthen the capacities of its telecom towers

The Nigerian subsidiary of the telecoms infrastructure company IHS Towers announced on Wednesday January 31 that it had deployed 10,000 km of fiber optic cables to connect its telecoms towers across Nigeria. The infrastructure aims to increase the transmission capacity of the towers in order to improve the performance of access networks and support the introduction of new generation technologies such as 5G.
“By connecting the towers, IHS Nigeria helps bring fiber infrastructure to the heart of metropolitan areas and support the delivery of digital services to homes, businesses and public institutions in partnership with its customers,” the company explained .
This initiative is expected to help improve the quality and coverage of connectivity services in Nigeria. It comes at a time when the federal government is seeking to accelerate the deployment of high-speed telecoms infrastructure in the country, as part of its digital transformation ambitions. The country needs to invest between 1.5 and 2 billion US dollars over the next few years to deploy around 60,000 km of optical fiber.
Additionally, IHS Towers is strengthening its capabilities as Nigerian telecom operators seek to expand their 4G and 5G networks amid growing demand for high-speed connectivity.
The deployment of 10,000 km of optical fiber should also enable IHS Nigeria to strengthen the confidence of Nigerian mobile operators, win new contracts and increase its revenues. The company is currently lobbying to reclaim a lease contract for 2,500 towers that MTN Nigeria withdrew from it and gave to rival American Tower Corporation (ATC).
As a reminder, IHS Nigeria has 16,000 towers under contract. During the first nine months of 2023, the Nigerian subsidiary of IHS Towers contributed $1.06 billion to the group’s revenues which stood at $1.61 billion.
