Airtel Africa announces construction of data center in Kenya

Telecoms company Airtel Africa plans to build a data center in Nairobi, Kenya, reports The EastAfrican , quoting Segun Ogunsanya, the company’s managing director, during a conference call with analysts on February 1. The infrastructure will have a capacity of 7 MW. It can be used in telecommunications and other sectors.

Construction work on the Nairobi data center will begin shortly after that of the data center the company plans to build in Lagos, Nigeria. Commissioning of the infrastructure is planned for mid-2026.

In December 2023, Airtel Africa launched the activities of its data center subsidiary called Nxtra by Airtel (Nxtra). The company intends to build an extensive data center network in Africa with high-capacity facilities in major cities within the coverage area. This should enable it to provide integrated, secure and scalable solutions to hyperscalers, large African enterprises, start-ups, SMEs and governments.

The initiative is part of Airtel Africa’s desire to diversify its sources of revenue in Africa in a context marked by the growing demand for digital services. The company launched a fiber optic subsidiary called Telesonic last week. During the first nine months of 2023, the company had generated revenue of $3.86 billion.
