Mauritania announces an investment of $30 million in the development of its digital infrastructure

The Mauritanian government plans to invest $30 million in the development of its digital infrastructure. This was revealed by Mohamed Louly, Minister of Digital Transformation, Innovation and Modernization of the Administration, in an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) . It was on the sidelines of the 2024 edition of the World Government Summit which is being held from February 12 to 14 in Dubai.
This initiative is part of the Mauritanian government’s desire to strengthen the country’s national infrastructure, in a context marked by the acceleration of digital transformation and an ever-increasing demand for high-speed connectivity.
The executive is currently working on connecting Mauritania to its second submarine fiber optic cable with financial support from the World Bank and the European Investment Bank (EIB). In December 2023, it awarded the contract to the Irish company EllaLink. This infrastructure will complement the capacities of the ACE cable to which the country connected in 2011 and on which it essentially depends in terms of international bandwidth.
Investments in the development of the national telecoms infrastructure should notably make it possible to provide populations and businesses with reliable and quality high-speed Internet connectivity. This will also accelerate the country’s digital transformation. Nouakchott plans to launch five new digital transformation projects to support community services and innovation.
