February 16th 2024
The public telecoms company Congo Telecom plans to launch into the mobile telephony and mobile money segments this year. This was suggested by Yves Castanou (photo, center), the general director of the historic operator, at the beginning of the week, at the opening of the first edition of the Forum of Public Enterprises in Central Africa (FEPAC). ) which was held from Monday February 12 to Wednesday February 14 in Brazzaville.
This initiative is part of Congo Telecom’s ambition to be, by 2030, the leading digital operator in the Republic of Congo and a major player in the Central African sub-region. To this end, the company has developed a four-year strategic plan called “Transform”. It is based on 8 pillars which are the offers; customer experience; Branding ; cost optimization; corporate culture; human capital; technologies and networks; the ecosystem and partnerships.
The initiative should allow Congo Telecom to diversify its activities as well as its sources of income. Created in March 2003 following the dissolution of the National Post and Telecommunications Office, the company claims the status of dominant operator in certain segments of the telecommunications and digital market such as fixed telephony and optical fiber.
The diversification of Congo Télécom’s activities should introduce more competition in segments where MTN and Airtel operate as a duopoly. According to statistics from the Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Agency (ARPCE), MTN controlled 60% market share in October 2023 compared to 40% for Airtel. In the mobile financial services segment, MTN had 5.07 million customers as of May 2023 compared to 3.5 million for Airtel.
