In Tanzania, Tigo entrusts Globe Teleservices with strengthening the security of its SMS services

Tanzanian telecoms company Tigo signed a partnership agreement with communications solutions provider Globe Teleservices on Monday, February 19, to strengthen the security of its international application-to-person (A2P) SMS traffic. The initiative should enable the mobile operator to combat revenue losses caused by SMS fraud such as smishing, spam, SIM farming, gray routes, SMS pumping, etc.

This initiative comes in a context marked by the increase in cases of fraud in the Tanzanian telecoms sector. According to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), mobile operators recorded 21,788 fraud attempts on their networks during the second quarter of 2023/2024 (October to December). Tigo recorded the highest number of fraud attempts: 8,163 attempts, or 38.5% of the total number.

Strengthening security should notably allow Tigo to increase its revenues and improve the confidence of its subscribers. This will allow it to increase its market share which stood at 28% in the second quarter of 2023/2024. Its competitors Vodacom, Airtel, Halotel and TTCL held 30%, 27%, 12% and 3% respectively.
