In Burkina Faso, the telecoms regulator is setting up a consultation framework with certain players in the sector

The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts of Burkina Faso (ARCEP) created, on Tuesday March 5, a framework for consultation with stakeholders in the ecosystem, other than operators. These include capacity sales operators, FTTH (fiber to the home) Internet access providers and infrastructure providers.
“ The establishment of this framework aims to create the conditions for interaction between ARCEP and operators selling capacity, providing FTTH Internet access and infrastructure. More specifically, this initiative will contribute to mutual information on developments and projects in the electronic communications sector and exchanges on the difficulties encountered ,” explained the electronic communications policeman in a press release.
This initiative is part of ARCEP’s desire to strengthen the regulation of the telecoms sector through better knowledge of the expectations of all stakeholders. The regulator had already established a consultation framework with the country’s mobile telephone operators, namely Moov Africa (ONATEL), Telecel, and Orange.
Better regulation should accelerate the development of the Burkinabe electronic communications sector for the benefit of consumers. According to ARCEP data, Burkina Faso had 26.4 million mobile telephone subscribers and 17.7 million mobile Internet users in the third quarter of 2023. If the penetration rates of its two services are relatively high, the actual figures are expected to be lower given that some people have multiple SIM cards.
